Broncos head coach Sean Payton gave us an encouraging update on linebacker Dre Greenlaw.
The Denver Broncos made a big splash in free agency when they signed linebacker Dre Greenlaw to help improve their linebacker room. He is coming off an Achilles injury but should be back to 100% and even had the 49ers brass begging him to come back before he officially put pen to paper with the Broncos.
This was a big get for the Broncos.
However, on the Sunday after the 2025 NFL Draft, a Bay Area report dropped indicating that Greenlaw suffered a “serious quad injury” and could miss a substantial portion of the upcoming 2025 NFL season. Thankfully, this report was quickly shot down, and it was accurately reported that Greenlaw merely suffered a minor quad injury that would sideline him for a few weeks.
Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton commented on this for the first time this past weekend during their rookie minicamp and told reporters that Greenlaw will be a full participant in training camp.

After being asked about Greenlaw, Payton laughed a little bit and said, despite being tempted, he showed great restraint from commenting on the false report in the moment.
“He’s on schedule. I saw the early reports, and you don’t know how tempted I get sometimes… But I showed great restraint. (Laughs) He’s doing well and will be a full participant in training camp. All of that’s doing great, but I refrained.”
Payton is not shy about going after the media, and this false report likely set him off a little bit, but as he said, he showed great restraint and refrained from commenting on the early reports.
This is a great update on Greenlaw as his recovery from an Achilles injury he suffered during the 49ers‘ loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl is a bit of an unknown. He tried coming back late last season but was dealing with some soreness and was eventually shut down as the 49ers had nothing meaningful to play for. The fact that the 49ers were aggressive in wanting Greenlaw back while knowing first hand about his rehab should be a good sign to Broncos fans worried about his prognosis moving forward.
If healthy, Greenlaw will be a huge addition to their defense. The Broncos’ linebackers were a weak point last season, especially after they lost Alex Singleton for the season. Now, adding a hopefully healthy Greenlaw and Singleton to the mix will be a huge boost to their defense.
It sounds like we won’t see much of Greenlaw during OTAs and minicamp, but his rehab and how he is feeling will be a storyline to watch as we move through the offseason and into training camp. This is a promising update and hopefully, we get more of them moving forward with Greenlaw and the rest of the Broncos recovering from injuries.
