Grim Update on St. Louis Blues Defenceman

May 7, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The St. Louis Blues cleaned out lockers on Tuesday following their elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. General manager Doug Armstrong provided updates on several injured players. While some updates were promising, such as Dylan Holloway, others were grim. For defenceman Torey Krug, Armstrong had a grim update about his injury and his future in hockey.

Torey Krug Injury Update

Army on Krug: “I don’t really think there’s much uncertainty with Torey. I talked to him, he was at the rink the other day. He’s just getting almost normal to day-to-day living with his ankle. So I’m not expecting him to play again. He’s hoping I’m wrong and I’m hoping I’m wrong,…

Krug missed the entire season with arthritis. At the time of his surgery, many were aware of the problems that arthritis could create for an aging hockey player. Armstrong acknowledged that Tuesday, stating he believes Krug will not play again.

According to Armstrong, Krug is just now returning to normal day-to-day life. His injury is almost a year old. It does seem it will be a tall order for Krug to return to hockey. Armstrong noted Krug is hopeful to return.

Impact on the Blues

It is sad when a player has to retire due to injury. All players want to make the decision to hang up the skates and not have the decision made for them. Unfortunately for Krug, the decision may have been made for him.

Krug joined the Blues prior to the 2020-21 season. Krug helped the Blues reach the playoffs his first three seasons with the team. However, as the team began to transition to a retool, the Blues looked to trade Krug, but were unsuccessful in finding a trade partner.

Krug will get paid until his contract expires in two seasons. However, if they keep him on long-term injured reserve, his $6.5 salary will not count against the salary cap. The Blues would be able to use that money in other ways.

If Krug’s playing days are over, hopefully he can still be involved in the organization in some way.
