Rapids give up on disaster season, ship off star player to Toronto

Mark-Anthony Kaye is going home to Canada, the Rapids get some assets

The Mark-Anthony Kaye experience is over less than a year after it began, as the Colorado Rapids have sent him to Canada.

Tom Bogert of MLSSoccer.com reports that Colorado is sending MAK to TFC for a package of assets.

Bogert outlines what the Rapids will get back:

  • Ralph Priso
  • Around $1 million General Allocation Money
  • 2023 international roster spot
  • TFC’s first-round SuperDraft pick

Colorado’s follow-up to their sparkling 2021 season that saw the ‘Pids capture the regular season western conference title has been a disaster. The Burgundy Boys are seven points out of a playoff spot exactly halfway through the season.

Kaye was acquired from LAFC for about the same value if not a little less last July. Kaye was then extended in January. At 700K, Kaye was the second-highest player on the team.

Kaye played in 32 matches for the Rapids, scoring four goals and adding two assists. According to sources within the Rapids, Kaye was not seen as a great locker room fit. This could be seen last game where he seemingly never passed the ball to Lucas Esteves on the left side. MAK had performed much better on the international stage for the Great White North than he did in Denver.

Kaye, 27, is from Toronto and will get to play for his hometown team, while Colorado will toil with a selloff, it seems. The Rapids midfield has not been the same since the Kellyn Acosta trade. The Rapids have also lost several contributors to injury in the midfield while seeing Cole Bassett transferred to Europe. And Auston Trusty just played his final match for Colorado.

This is undoubtedly the start of the Rapids giving up on their season after a disastrous July 4 match. But if Conor Casey taught us anything in 2019, you’re never truly done until Decison Day.

Priso is a homegrown TFC player who rates well defensively for a midfielder in the 10 matches he’s played this season. As for GAM and such, I’m not going to sit here and say, “yay,” Uncle Stan can spend more when he’s richer than the guy whose team just bought Gareth Bale to pair with Carlos Vela and Acosta.
