After splitting a four-game series with their division rival San Diego Padres, the Colorado Rockies will now head to Mexico City for a two-game series with the struggling Houston Astros. This will be the seventh regular season series played in Mexico. Houston and Colorado will be playing in their first international series since 2019. The Astros played the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Monterrey, and the Rockies played against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Monterrey. With these two teams dealing with severe struggles early on, this puts out the opportunity for one of these two teams to show their potential. This series will be played at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City. There are a lot of expectations for these two teams heading into May, especially going into this series with both teams at the bottom of their respective division.
What To Expect From The Rockies Mexico City Series
Intensity
The Rockies and Astros have something to prove in this Mexico City series. Houston has won two of their last ten games. At the same time, Colorado has won three of their last ten. These two teams are heading into Mexico City with a 7-19 record. Although it’s just a two-game series, these teams will come into Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú with pure intensity. Colorado has dealt with embarrassing moments during this first month of regular season action. For Houston, they were expected to be a much better team than how they’ve been playing. Each team is determined and fired up coming into this series. This two-game series will allow both teams to show why they deserve more respect from around the league.
A Bunch Of Runs
These two teams have dealt with some serious problems with their pitching staff. Colorado’s pitchers have struggled tremendously, putting up the worst ERA in the league thus far with a hideous 5.74 ERA. Houston is not far behind with a 5.07 ERA. The Rockies have given up the most runs in the league, with 156 runs allowed through 26 games. The Astros are 28th in the league with 138 runs allowed. Batters have a .262 batting average against Houston’s pitching and a .295 average against the Rockies pitching staff. Expect both teams to give up many runs during this two-game series in Mexico City. With the way these teams pitch, it should be a total slugfest.
Mexico City Will Be A Great Environment for Baseball
The crowd at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú should be electrified. Both teams have ties to Mexico City, as the cities are near the Mexican border. Colorado will be “home” for both games, and they must take advantage of being the home team. Many in the crowd may root for the Astros, but the Rockies must show they are ready to face all types of adversity, as they did so already with a bunch of reoccurring drama through the first month of the regular season. During this two-game series, Colorado will have Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber on the mound. Hopefully, since Rockies legends and Mexican natives Vinny Castilla and Jorge De La Rosa will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, the crowd will band together behind Colorado and propel this team to some much-needed wins.
