Two Veteran Rockies Holding the Team Together Early

April 4, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Colorado Rockies first seven games of the season haven’t gone as perhaps planned. With a  1-6 record, they’ll return to Coors Field for their home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. Colorado is playing in one of the toughest if not one of the most competitive divisions in baseball. Each win won’t come easy, the Rockies have higher expectations than this initial poor start. Despite the bad start, two veteran players on the Rockies are holding the team together early on. With plenty of young talent and depth within the lineup, these two veterans have been leading the way. They’re showing how to achieve major league success as they navigate through it.

Hopefully, being in front of the home crowd fans will help this team’s confidence and play over their next several games.

Great Start to the Season for Two Veteran Rockies

Charlie Blackmon

An impressive stat from the 1st week of the season…

Only 2 players in MLB have at least 25 plate appearances and have still not struck out once:

Charlie Blackmon has done all that he can in six games of this new season. Colorado’s offense didn’t have much to show during their first four games against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but Blackmon was certainly one of the team’s top performers.  Through 24 at-bats,  the 14-year veteran he has recorded ten hits, with five RBI, a stolen base, and a .417 batting average. His strong start goes along with a .440 on-base percentage and a .625 slugging percentage. He’s had two games with multiple RBI thus far.

During the team’s recent series against the Chicago Cubs, Blackmon had a great three-game stretch. Overall, he went 7-for13 at the plate. In the Rockies 12-2 loss on Tuesday night, Blackmon went three for four at the plate. The next day, he went three for five with two runs batted in. Blackmon must continue to play well, and give these young batters confidence through this long 162-game season.

Ryan McMahon

#Rockies Ryan McMahon looks locked in through two games as he laces a single to right off fellow lefty Joe Mantiply.

He’s 3-for-5 with a double, two walks and a 1.514 so far.

Third baseman Ryan McMahon has appeared in all seven games for the club. With 24 at-bats, he has nine hits and two RBI while hitting .375/.419/.448. He’s who’s the only veteran who went 3-for-10 at the plate in the team’s recent series against the Cubs. However, during the Rockies series against the DBacks, McMahon went six for 14 at the plate with two runs batted in. In the team’s miserable 16-1 Opening Day loss, McMahon scored the only run of the game for the Rockies.

McMahon did manage to hit .500 batting average in the first three games of the season. Also, he has reached base on a walk four times in the past seven games. Although the expectation for him is to have a consistent year with this team, he hopes to have a breakout year. He can show this Rockies franchise what they’ve been missing for a long time. If he can hit more than his usual 20 home runs, and have a career year with runs batted in, McMahon could be on the verge of an All-Star season.
