The Colorado Rockies have the worst league in the National League at 16-33. The Rockies pitching staff ranks dead last with a 5.27 ERA. They’ve given up the most hits this season. They have given up 273 runs, which ranks second to last behind the Miami Marlins, who’ve given up 275 runs. The Rockies pitching staff also ranks last with 326 strikeouts, 38 strikeouts behind the 29th-ranked Washington Nationals. Despite all the failures on the mound this season, Colorado has had some bright spots within their rotation and the bullpen. As we head into June, there have been three Rockies pitchers that have stood out amongst their teammates. While they may have a bad start here and there, their exceptional pitching has certainly exceeded their expectations going into this regular season.
Three Rockies Pitchers Who Have Been Exceptional
Cal Quantrill
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Cal Quantrill has been one of the best if not the best, starter the Rockies have had on the mound this season. Through 10 starts, Quantrill has recorded a 3-3 record. In almost 58 innings pitched, he’s put up an ERA of 3.59. He’s allowed 23 runs on 51 hits while striking out 44 batters. On May 3rd against the Pirates, the 29-year-old starting pitcher pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out nine during a 3-2 win. Through May, he’s given up a total of four runs through four starts, where he’s gone 3-1 in his last five starts.
He’s certainly had some bad outings this season. There were three starts where he allowed four or more runs. On April 27th, during a 12-4 loss to the Houston Astros, Quantrill allowed six runs on six hits. If he can continue his success from May and carry into June, we could see the Rockies win a few more much-needed ball games. Quantrill has the most wins from a Rockies starter. He’ll aim to keep that going throughout the season.
Austin Gomber
In his fourth season in Colorado, Austin Gomber had trouble early on. However, recently, his production on the mound has been a lot more consistent. In his last five starts, he’s put up a 1-1 record with an incredible 1.60 ERA. That’s not too far off from his stats for the regular season. Through 10 starts, Gomber has put up a 1-2 record. In almost 59 innings pitched, the 30-year-old starter has given up 19 runs on 48 hits. He’s struck out 41 batters as well. He’s allowed one earned run or less during five out of his last six starts.
This past Wednesday, during a 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics, Gomber pitched eight innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out six batters in the win. Although three of his starts in May came to a no-decision, the Rockies starter has been just what the team needs. He’s certainly been a successful part of the Rockies recent seven-game win streak where in two he allowed just two runs during those much-needed wins for Colorado. He hopes to continue his success on the mound as we head into June.
Jalen Beeks
Rockies reliever Jalen Beeks has been an enormous part of the bullpen. He’s appeared in 21 games so far this season. Through 23 innings pitched, he’s recorded a 2.74 ERA. Beeks has given up 19 hits while striking out 17 batters. In six out of eight appearances in May, the 30-year-old reliever gave up no runs. This is exactly what the Rockies need to stay in the ball game and have a chance to win. Consistency from the bullpen is huge, and Beeks has been the most solid piece coming out of Colorado’s pen.
