This Season Has Been Disastrous For The Colorado Rockies

June 29, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Before the start of the regular season, the Colorado Rockies wanted to forget about the woes of their 2023 season. They put up a franchise-worst 59-103 record. After going 17-12 this past spring training, it looked like they might overcome their struggles. Since Opening Day, though, the Rockies have dealt with disasters. While there was one bright moment when the Rockies went on a seven-game win streak, this season has been a disastrous one for Colorado, whether it’s strange injuries or a team’s staff member doing something completely out of line. Last night during the first game of a three-game series, the Rockies took a 5-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Chicago, who currently holds the worst record in the majors, could give Colorado a chance to compete for the first pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

How This Season Has Been Disastrous For The Colorado Rockies

The Rockies’ embarrassing 16-1 Opening Day loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks set the tone for how this season would go. This team edged themselves on the wrong side of the MLB history books, becoming the first team since 1900 to trail in their first 29 games. Colorado is currently 27-54. They’ve lost their last four games and six out of their last seven games. While they aren’t awful when they are home at Coors Field, their play could certainly improve. The Rockies have a home record of 16-24 and a disastrous 11-30 road record. Colorado’s offense ranks in the top 20 at 17th with 342 runs scored. However, they’ve given up 477, which is dead last in the majors.

Their offense at times has been bleak. When the offense scores a few runs, there have been multiple occasions this season where either the Rockies starter or a reliever blows the team’s lead completely, which earns them the loss. With a team ERA of 5.60, Colorado’s pitching staff must find answers, and fast. With the way this team has played since the conclusion of their win streak a few weeks ago, the Rockies may surpass their franchise-worst 2023 season.

What’s In Store For The Rockies Future?

With a team that’s genuinely pretty young, the Rockies are destined to be the worst team in the National League, or perhaps the entire majors this season. This would bring Colorado around to that first overall pick in the 2025 Draft. It’s certainly safe to say with so many young position players on the team full of potential, the Rockies will aim to draft the future cornerstone to either their starting rotation or the bullpen. The Rockies need one starter who can dominate the mound every time out, whether that’s through the draft or free agency. Colorado needs a pitcher who can go the distance, and hold the team’s leads.

If this offensive core sticks together over the next few seasons, they will have the potential to overthrow their rivals in the NL West. Once these guys’ games come around at the major league level, that’s when this Rockies team will improve exponentially. It may take more time than what some fans or other players on the team hope for. Yet, Colorado’s offense has all the right pieces in place. It’s the pitching this team needs to focus their attention on next.
