The Rockies And Six Other Teams May Have Something In Common

May 8, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Colorado Rockies have lost eight out of their 10 games and are on another losing streak after losing their last two games of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Last week, the team edged themselves into the MLB history books after trailing in their first 31 games of the season. They surpassed the 1910 St. Louis Browns, who trailed in their first 28 games of the season. This Colorado team has the chance to reach a new franchise low. There have been some talks that this Rockies team may not even achieve 50 wins this season. If they don’t, they’ll become the seventh team in MLB history to put up a record under 50 wins. Colorado’s 2023 season looked bad, but it seems like the Rockies can’t catch a break this season.

This Is What The Rockies And Six Other Teams Have In Common

The Rockies and the Chicago White Sox are the only two teams thus far that have recorded below-double-digit wins. Both teams could put themselves on the wrong side of the MLB history books with historically bad seasons. If these teams fall below 50 wins, they’ll be in some embarrassing company. The 1952 Pittsburgh Pirates, 1961 Philadelphia Phillies, 1962 New York Mets, 2003 and 2019 Detroit Tigers, and the 2018 Baltimore Orioles have all put up records with 47 or fewer wins. All six of these teams were historically bad. This Rockies team has yet to win back-to-back games this season. Even if the Rockies went .500 for the rest of the season, they would still have finished with 73 wins. Colorado is a suitable strong candidate to lose 100-plus games once again.

Can They Obtain 50-plus Wins This Season?

There’s a good chance this Colorado team does not reach the 50-win pinnacle. This would mean the team completely backtracked from the year before, and they did not gain or receive any experience from the 2023 season’s struggles. We thought last season’s Oakland Athletics would hit this historically bad record, but it may possibly be the Rockies who become the third team in a decade to win under 50 games. The Rockies are in desperate need of a game-changer, someone who can step up and lead the team to victory. Whether that’s Rockies number four prospect Jordan Beck, or 21-year-old right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli. Somebody on this team must get the club going and motivated to go out on the field every day and give the fans a much-needed win. As they play their division rival San Francisco Giants tonight, we’ll see if Colorado has made any successful adjustments.
