The deal will bring Case Williams, a Rockies 2020 draft pick, back to Denver

The Rockies have officially entered the 2021 trade chat.

Today, they announced trading relief pitcher Mychal Givens to the Reds for pitching prospect (and old friend) Case Williams and RHP Noah Davis, an A-level pitcher.

Mychal Givens

Givens came to the Rockies in 2020 through a trade with the Orioles. During his time in Colorado, Givens has earned a 3.69 ERA after appearing in 41 games. He’s had an FIP of 5.80 with a WHIP of 1.333.

The 31-year-old pitcher will be a free agent in 2022, and his 2021 salary is $4.05 million. He was part of a surprising move made by the Rockies in 2020 that sent Tyler Nevin and Terrin Vavra to the Orioles.

Case Williams

The Rockies drafted Williams in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. The graduate of Douglas County High School is familiar with the challenges of pitching at elevation and has been well scouted by the Rockies. He also will not require a spot on the Rockies 40-man roster. (Williams was sent to Cincinnati in 2020 as part of the Jeff Hoffman-Jameson Hannah trade.) The deal also brought Robert Stephenson to Colorado. (Read more about Williams’ signing here.)

Williams has spent 2021 in the Reds’ A-level Daytona team. He currently has an ERA of 5.55 in 47 innings. According to MLB Pipeline, Williams is ranked 20th in the Reds’ system.

Noah Davis

In the deal, the Rockies will also receive RHP Noah Davis. A graduate of UC-Santa Barbara, Davis is playing High-A ball in the Reds system and is ranked 26th by MLB Pipeline. The 24-year-old has a 50-grade fastball, slider, and changeup with a 45-grade curveball. According to MLB Pipeline:

Davis has the chance to have a usable four-pitch mix. His fastball typically sits around 92-93 mph with decent sink and tail to it, and he can reach back for 94-95 mph on occasion. He throws both a slider, 83-85 mph, and a curve, 73-77 mph, with the former a touch ahead of the latter. He has feel for a changeup with fade and deception, giving him a fourth potentially average offering.

In 2018, he had Tommy John surgery.

Currently, he has a 3.60 ERA in 65 innings over 13 games. He has struck out 77 and walked 35.

Purple Row will update this story as more details become available.

This article has been corrected to reflect that Davis had Tommy John surgery in 2018, not 2019.
