Rockies Third Baseman On The Verge Of First All-Star Appearance

June 27, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Unsurprisingly, the Colorado Rockies will be in the running for the 2025 first-overall pick. There haven’t been many bright spots for this Rockies team this season. The team has a plethora of young talent, but it will take time for Colorado to be a postseason contender again. With 27 wins on the season nearing the end of June, the Rockies don’t have much to look forward to besides some of their guys making the 2024 National League all-star team. If these Colorado players make the all-star game, it will certainly boost the franchise’s confidence. Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon is on the verge of making his first all-star appearance. McMahon has led the team and has been the best Rockies batter this regular season by far. He leads in multiple statistical categories and has the potential to hit a bunch of career highs.

Rockies Third Baseman On The Verge Of First All-Star Appearance

Colorado’s 29-year-old third baseman has been on top of his game through 77 regular season games. Through 292 at-bats, McMahon has recorded a stolen base, 82 hits, 14 home runs, and 42 runs batted in. He’s currently slashing .281/.327/.483. So far, his best game of the season was on April 12th. During a 12-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, McMahon went four for six with three doubles and two runs batted in.

He has all the right numbers to earn himself an all-star roster spot. If the Rockies third baseman becomes an all-star for the first time, expect McMahon’s confidence and play to exponentially rise. The 29-year-old is 53 hits away from passing his career-high of 134 set in 2021. He needs 11 homers and 44 runs batted to pass his career high. His .281 batting average this season is a career high. Hopefully, he continues to maintain his success. McMahon has held this team down since the beginning of the season. Things can only worsen if he’s not voted in an all-star.

What If McMahon Doesn’t Make The All-Star Team?

This season, McMahon and several other Rockies have struck out more than the MLB average. In 292 at-bats, the 29-year-old has struck out 92 times. He has a strikeout percentage of 42 percent against a curveball, 33 against a fastball, and 31 facing a slider. While he has a .250 batting average against eight pitches he’s seen this season, he must lower his chances of striking out. It’s a crucial part of his game that he needs to work on.

If McMahon does not become a 2024 National League all-star, the Rockies season may avalanche to a new low, one this franchise has yet to see in its 31 years of existence. McMahon’s confidence and play may be a little shaky, and the team’s offensive unit may collapse if the Rockies third baseman cannot perform as he has been. Currently, Colorado has 27 wins under their belts. At the all-star break, the Rockies had 34 wins. If the team cannot get near that total of 34 wins at the all-star break, we may see the Rockies have something in common with a group of flawed few teams that’s stamped themselves on the wrong side of the MLB history books.
