On Monday night, the Colorado Rockies hit a new low once again. They became the first team since the 1931 Cincinnati Reds to accomplish an awful feat, which is trailing in their first 23 games of the regular season. Before last night’s game, the Rockies at 5-18 looked to be one of the worst if not the worst team in the Majors. Colorado’s offense came through during their second game of a four-game set against the Padres. The offense, in particular, Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers stepped up in a 7-4 victory. This win is the Rockies second win in their last 10 games. After trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the third inning, the young infielder Rodgers, blasted a grand slam to left field to give Colorado a 5-4 lead. The Rockies tacked on two more runs to take a big-time win over their divisional rival.

Rockies Struggling Infielder Breaks Out With Grand Slam
Although he helped his team get a monumental win over the Padres last night, the 27-year-old second baseman has been having a rough time at the plate. He’s played in 21 out of the Rockies 24 games. In 71 at-bats, Rodgers has recorded just 14 hits and 20 strikeouts. He hit his first home run of the season last night with that masterful grand slam. This gives him a total of seven runs batted in thus far. His .197 batting average is a career low. That’s if you don’t count the shortened 2020 COVID-19 season where he only had 21 at-bats and finished with a terrible .095 batting average. Even in the Rockies win, Rodgers went one for four at the plate.

Yes, his grand slam was instrumental in the team’s win last night, but management and the fans have been expecting more out of the young second baseman. If he does not clean up his act at the plate, along with the six other Rockies who’ve been striking out more than average this season, the Rockies enormous early struggles both on the mound and at the plate, this team will plunge into depths they haven’t before in their franchise’s history. The Rockies are off to their worst start since 2005 and they have trailed in all of their games this year through 24 games. Only the 1912 St. Louis Browns trailed in more (28).
The young infielder’s grand slam may bring a boat of confidence to a team that’s been desperately searching to find that missing link all season long. It was great for Rodgers to contribute to the team’s much-needed win last night. However, he must continue to play well to help this struggling Rockies team win.
