Schunk will get his second crack at the bigs, while Beck will make a case to return to the starting lineup
Prior to the first game of their three-game series with the visiting Washington Nationals on Saturday, the Colorado Rockies announced a flurry of roster moves:
The Rockies announced the following moves today:
– Selected the contract of INF Aaron Schunk (#30) from Triple-A Albuquerque.
– Placed INF Ezequiel Tovar on the 10-day IL (retroactive to April 16) with a left hip contusion.
– Placed OF Brenton Doyle on the bereavement list…— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) April 19, 2025
Aaron Schunk was once a top-30 PuRP and made his MLB debut last year, appearing in 39 games in the season’s latter half. He slashed 234/.265/.330 in those contests and appeared at second base, third base, shortstop, and designated hitter. After being outrighted earlier this year, he’ll try to make a case for an extended big league opportunity as he looks to fill in for an injured Ezequiel Tovar.
Tovar, a focal point of Colorado’s defensive and offensive identity, is off to a slow start this year. Slashing just .212/.257/.560 and still searching for his first home run of the season, Tovar has been dealing with hip issues since the season’s outset. Hopefully a trip to the IL will help the star shortstop return to full health and allow him to find the swing that led to such success last year.
His co-star, Brenton Doyle, will be taking time away on the bereavement list (and we at Purple Row send our condolences to Doyle during this time). The time away from the field will hopefully help the Gold Glove center fielder overcome a nagging quad injury that’s kept him out of the lineup in recent weeks.
In his stead, the Rockies have also called up Jordan Beck. After beginning the season as the starting left fielder, Beck saw his MLB tenure momentarily halted when, after recording a .150/.261/.411 slash line and striking out in more than a third of his at-bats, he was sent back down to Triple-A Albuquerque, with his path back to the majors unclear. While this will likely be another short stay until Doyle returns, Beck could conceivably force himself back into an everyday role with strong play in the interim.
Schunk and Beck are both in the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against the Nats.
Finally, Austin Gomber has been placed on the 60-Day IL. Gomber’s been plagued with shoulder pain since spring training, and had made one rehab start. While the Rockies were hoping he’d be able to return soon, it appears that he’ll now miss extended time.
