The Rockies reunite with a familiar and versatile player as their infield depth is tested.
With their infield depth quickly going from overstocked to tenuous, the Colorado Rockies have found themselves reuniting with a familiar—and defensively versatile—face.
On Saturday evening, the Rockies have acquired utility infielder Alan Trejo from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations.
Trejo, now 28, was drafted by the Rockies in 2017 and made his professional debut with the team in 2021. He was designated for assignment last summer and has since spent time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers organizations via their Triple-A affiliates.
Trejo hit .228/.276/.334 with 19 doubles and 9 home runs over parts of four seasons with the Rockies, frequently bouncing back and forth between the big league team and the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes.
In 19 games with the Triple-A Round Rock Express this season, Trejo hit .211/.247/.352 with eight doubles, a triple, and 13 RBIs.
The Rockies headed into spring training with what seemed like a surplus of middle infielders. After one month of regular season play, that depth is being tested due to injuries.
A natural shortstop, Trejo can also play second and third base. He fills an immediate need and is familiar with the organization.
For now, Trejo will be assigned to the Isotopes. If the Rockies need to call upon his services, they will have to clear space on the 40-man roster. A possible move would be to transfer Kris Bryant to the 60-day injured list.
Update: Sunday April 27th, 2025 at 10:00 AM MDT
On Sunday morning the Rockies made the transaction official. The Rockies then announced a handful of roster moves.
The Rockies selected Trejo’s contract, adding him to the 40-man roster.
To clear room on the 40-man, left-handed pitcher Lucas Gilbreath has been designated for assignment. Catcher Braxton Fulford and right-handed pitcher Jaden Hill have been optioned to the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes.
In addition to Trejo, right-handed pitcher Bradley Blalock has been recalled from Triple-A and will start Sunday’s game against the Reds.
