Márquez was brilliant as Goodman flirts with a cycle
On a day dedicated to mothers everywhere, there is no doubt that the Colorado Rockies (7-33) are a team only a mother could live this season. Thankfully, Sunday gave those mothers a day to be proud as they defeated the San Diego Padres (25-14), 9-3 at Coors Field.
Germán Márquez was brilliant on the mound as his offense provided plenty of run support and defensive effort.
Márquez for Moms
Márquez truly made his mother proud with a phenomenal performance on the mound that the Rockies have desperately needed from the former All-Star. The Padres scored a run in the first on two hits and Márquez looked a little shaky with a pair of wild pitches. Luckily, he got out of the inning down 1-0 and settled in nicely the rest of the way.
Through seven innings, Márquez allowed just one run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. He ran into a little bit of traffic in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but he managed to close out the inning with a double play to end his day. He threw 78 pitches, 54 for strikes, while inducing 11 groundouts and four flyouts.
Entering that seventh inning, Márquez retired 17 straight batters, which tied a career high and is the longest streak by a Rockies pitcher this season. It was sorely needed for both Márquez and the Rockies to give the bullpen a much-needed break, and it brought him down to an 8.27 ERA and was his first win of the year and first since April 2023.
Goodman for Moms
What better way to dedicate a day to your mom than by flirting with a cycle? A key component of the Rockies’ win was the performance of Hunter Goodman at the plate. Goodman kicked off his day with a three-run shot in the bottom of the first to give the Rockies the lead that they would never surrender.

His next time up in the third inning, Goodman laced a ball down the left field line for a two-run triple to put the Rockies up 5-1. With the hard parts done, all he had to do was get a single and a double for the rest of the game. After a grounder to shortstop his third time up, Goodman sent a ball to left field for a double off the wall. The Padres challenged the tag at second base as he slid in, but the safe call stood.
Needing just a single, Goodman stepped up with two outs in the eighth, but hit a fly ball to left field for an out. On the day he went 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored and is now hitting .288 on the season.
Taco’s for Moms
It wasn’t just Goodman, however, as the rest of the Rockies’ offense helped out. The team tallied 12 hits with six extra-base hits. Jordan Beck, Mickey Moniak, and Ryan McMahon each had multiple hits, including McMahon’s solo home run in the eighth.
In total, they went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position while striking out nine times with three walks. After the blowout from yesterday, it was a welcome sight for the offense to come out and make contact against a tough pitcher in Nick Pivetta.

The Rockies head out on the road for six games, starting with a three-game stint in Texas against the Rangers. Chase Dollander will toe the rubber against Tyler Mahle and a Rangers team that is floating around .500 with a 20-21 record.
