Gordan shines in short-notice start
Tanner Gordon threw six scoreless innings, the bullpen was nearly perfect and the Rockies offense combined for 12 hits to provide more than enough offense for Colorado to beat the Cardinals 6-0 on Wednesday.
Not only did the win mark the second consecutive and second overall series win at Coors Field this season, but the Rockies (26-76) are now 4-2 since returning from the All-Star break. Colorado also posted its first shutout since beating the Padres 8-0 on May 15, 2024 in San Diego. The win broke the longest shutout drought in MLB history in the Modern Era (since 1901), which the Rockies held at 220 games. It was also the first shutout at Coors Field since Colorado beat the A’s 2-0 on July 30, 2023.
St. Louis dropped to 51-52 with the loss.
Gordon’s Shutout 6
Despite a rough first inning when he issued two walks, Gordon recovered to throw his best start in four tries this season. It all started with a 94-mph fastball that was up and in to strike out Wilson Contreras and a ground out off the bat of Nolan Arenado that helped Gordon escape the first without any damage. After giving up a lead-off single to Masyn Winn, Gordon forced Jordan Walker into a double play groundout.
Gordon didn’t face much drama after that. He did surrender a two-out double to Walker in the fourth, but then got Yohel Pozo to pop out to Ryan McMahon in foul territory to end the inning. With his family in attendance and cheering him on, Gordon was pulled after six innings, having given up zero runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Nine more outs came by way of groundout. With his outstanding, 96-pitch performance, Gordon improved to a 2-2 record and lowered his ERA to 3.13. He also became the first Colorado rookie pitcher to throw six or more shutout innings at Coors Field since Kyle Freeland did it in 2017.
On a day when the Rockies had to put Germán Márquez on the 15-day IL with right bicep tendonitis, Gordon was brilliant in the short-notice start.
2nd Inning Rally
After hitting four ground balls, including an infield single for Hunter Goodman, in the first, the Rockies got the ball out of the infield a lot in the second inning. Ryan McMahon led off the inning with a walk and then Ezequiel Tovar flied out. With one out Austin Nola, Kyle Farmer, Adael Amador, Tyler Freeman, and Mickey Moniak hit five singles in a row to put the Rockies up 4-0.

The rally marked the first time this season the Rockies recorded five consecutive hits. Some were softly hit, like Amador’s, which forced Nola, the 35-year-old catcher, to race around third and creatively slide into home plate to evade a tag.
Moniak’s hit helped him extend his on-base streak to 16 games.
Beck Adds Insurance
Jordan Beck started slow by grounding out in his first two at-bats. After missing the rally in the second, he made his own in the fifth. Freeman started the inning off with a walk, and Goodman followed with a one-out single to set the table for Beck. He didn’t disappoint as he doubled to score Freeman and put the Rockies up 5-0.
Beck added another single in the seventh inning for a two-hit game. Nola, Goodman and Farmer also had two-hit performances. Beck’s double helped the Rockies go 5-for-6 with runners in scoring position through the first five innings. They ended the game 5-for-9 with RISP, but the early clutch hitting gave the Rockies all they needed.
Every Rockie in the starting lineup got at least one hit, except for McMahon, who went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
Tovar’s Fountain Shot
In the eighth inning, Tovar got his only hit of the game and made it count. He sent an 83.5-mph slider 390 to right field — just over the out-of-town scoreboard for his fifth homer of the year.
Beautiful Bullpen
Jimmy Herget entered the game in the seventh and pitched two brilliant innings. He gave up one hit for a hold. Tyler Kinley came in to pitch the ninth and did even better. Kinley started off with getting Arenado to line out to left field, ending Arenado’s 0-for-4 day, before striking out Winn and Walker.
On the day, the three Rockies pitchers held the St. Louis to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven Cardinals on base.

The Rockies have a day off on Thursday before starting a six-game road trip at Baltimore and Cleveland. The trip will begin Friday when Kyle Freeland (2-10, 5.19 ERA) will get the start for the Rockies, The Orioles have yet to name a starter.
