Rockies offensive ineptitude results in sweep at Fenway
As the rain picked up toward the end of the game at Fenway Park, it seemed like a fitting end to another series where the Rockies remain stuck under a losing storm cloud.
Against the Red Sox, the Rockies were outplayed in every aspect of the game and swept for the first time in regular season history in the all-time Boston-Colorado series. Including the Rockies 10-2 loss on Wednesday night, Colorado was outscored 29-7 in three games as it dropped to 21-72, while Boston (49-45) won its sixth straight.
Despicable 8th
Already down 5-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, the Rockies needed a miracle to pull off a win. Instead, it just got worse.
After Tyler Kinley threw a scoreless seventh inning, things didn’t go as well for Seth Halvorsen in the eighth. Masataka Yoshida, who was playing his first game of 2025 after suffering a shoulder injury, led off with a double, and Romy Gonzalez followed with a two-run homer to make it 7-2. Halvorsen then gave up a single and a walk before Jarren Duran crushed a three-run blast to increase Boston’s lead to 10-2.
Jimmy Herget then entered the game, and despite giving up a single, struck out former Rockie Trevor Story and got Wilyer Abreu to ground into a double play to avoid making it any worse.
Farm Bomb in Boston
In the top of the eighth, the game had a brief bright spot for the Rockies. Yanquiel Fernández got things started with a single, his fifth MLB hit in his seven games. Kyle Farmer made the most out of playing at Fenway by hitting a two-run blast over the Green Monster. It was the fourth homer of the season for Farmer and accounted for all of Colorado’s scoring in the game.
The Giolito Show
Lucas Giolito continued his impressive comeback season (after missing 2024 due to Tommy John surgery) with six scoreless innings against the Rockies. He struck out six Rockies, walked none and only surrendered four hits.
Despite aggressive efforts, the Rockies weren’t able to capitalize on their limited offensive production. Jordan Beck singled off the Green Monster in the first, but then was thrown out trying to steal second. After no action in the second and third innings, Tyler Freeman led off the fourth with a single. The hit extended his MLB-leading and career-high on-base streak to 23 games.
After Beck and Ryan McMahon hit a pair of flyouts, Michael Toglia doubled off the Green Monster in center field and Freeman tried to score. Instead, he was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay. Freeman added another infield hit in the sixth, but he was stranded on first.
Toglia, Beck and Freeman all recorded two-hit nights, while McMahon and Brenton Doyle, hitting in the third and fifth spots in the lineup, went a combined 0-for-8 with two strikeouts in the game.
Double D
In the first three innings, Senzatela gave up a homer, a double, a single, a walk and a hit by a pitch. In addition, Fernández made a fielding error that allowed Duran to reach third on his double. Remarkably, Boston managed only one run from those five base runners in the form of a solo homer from Carlos Narváez in the second. With Duran on third, Wilyer Abreu grounded into a double play due to Toglia’s ability to catch a grounder, throw from his knee to second and get the throw back from Orlando Arcia.
In the third, Senzatela got Story to ground into another double play to end the inning. Senzatela also struck out his former teammate in the first.
Senza’s Luck Runs Out
In the fourth inning, Senzatela gave up three hits, including a one-out double to Narváez. Narváez advanced to third on a balk and then came in to score when Yoshida singled. It got worse in the fifth when Roman Anthony connected for a one-out single and Abreu made him pay with a two-run homer that put the Red Sox up 4-0. Senzatela managed to get out of the inning without more damage but his night was finished. He gave up four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk. He dropped to 3-13 on the season with a 6.60 ERA.
