Rare Double Play leads Rockies to Manager’s 500th Win

June 13, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Even with the Colorado Rockies struggling for most of the season, they have something to celebrate. Last night during the team’s 5-4 win over the Minnesota Twins, Rockies manager Bud Black earned his 500th win as Colorado’s manager. Thanks to a double play from Jake Cave, he made a running catch and a perfect relay to throw to double off a Twins baserunner at a crucial point in the game. The win gives Black a managerial record of 1,149 wins and 1,312 losses overall. He became the first person in major league history with at least 100 wins as a pitcher and at least 500 games as a manager with two teams.

Bud Black Earns His 500th Win With the Rockies

Black owns a 500-599 record with the Rockies. With the San Diego Padres, the 66-year-old manager went 649-713. Black is currently 35 games away from passing Clint Hurdle for most managerial wins in Rockies history. Colorado’s already had one hot streak this season. If they can put up another winning streak or two, Black could pass Hurdle’s record this season. It may be tough, however. After this series with the Twins, the Rockies will head back home for a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

But for Black, he’s seen as one of the more popular figures in baseball. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli noted that after the game.

“He’s a class act. It’s not hard to see why people put a lot of faith in him and rely on him. He’s a smart baseball man, but he’s really great with people,” Baldelli said. “I’ll say congrats to him too on my own. But it’s a heck of an accomplishment, and that’s multiple organizations that really believe in him. As they should.”

Black can instill all the confidence in the world in his young team to pull ahead in these next few series.
