The Rockies held the Phillies in check for six innings before getting their doors blown off in the eighth and ninth innings.
After dropping two of three against the Arizona Diamondbacks—including two shutouts—the Colorado Rockies fled across the desert and the losing followed.
The Rockies held the Philadelphia Phillies to one run on eight hits through the first six innings of the series opener. Then everything unraveled. The Fightin’ Phils ended their night with nine runs on a whopping 17 hits as the affair went from close race to boat race
Tovar Time
Rockies fans were reminded of just how nice it is to have their starting shortstop back. Ezequiel Tovar went 2-for-4 and was directly responsible for two of the Rockies’ three runs this evening. He opened up the scoring in the first inning when he took a middle-middle hanging slider deep for his second home run of the season, and later drove home Jordan Beck home with a single in the third.
The Rockies’ third run was plated when Michael Toglia and Brenton Doyle went back-to-back with doubles in the sixth inning.
Land of the Free, Home of the K
Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland spun a solid 5 1⁄3 innings of work against the Phillies. While he did give up seven hits, only one was for extra bases. Trea Turner hit the ball into the deepest right field corner and flummoxed right fielder Tyler Freeman—who was playing the position for just the fifth time in his professional career. Freeland walked two batters and struck out a season high six before an elevated pitch count—and what appeared to be a developing hot spot on his finger—drove him from the game. Freeland left the game in line for his first win of the 2025 season, but the baseball gods had other plans.
A tough night for Seth Halvorsen
Rookie reliever Seth Halvorsen entered the game in the eighth inning with a one run lead. He left the game with his team trailing by three. Halvorsen gave up a leadoff single to Nick Castellanos, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. It looked like the hard-throwing righty could recover when he struck out JT Realmuto, but then Alec Boehm took him deep on a slider left in the middle of the zone. Two more runs scored via two singles and a double before Halvorsen was driven from the game.
One for the record books
The Rockies once again found themselves on the receiving end of a career milestone when Kyle Schwarber did something he does very well. He clubbed a no-doubt home run to right field from the hand of Scott Alexander to put the game even further out of reach. The Schwarbomb represents the slugger’s 16th home run of the season and the 300th of his career.
Alexander then gave up a two-run home run to Edmundo Sosa, his first of the season. Sosa went 4-for-4 on the evening and is now 9-for-11 with four extra base hits against Rockies pitching.
Coming Up Next
