MLS | The Latest Round-Up Of The 2021 Season

July 29, 2021 by The Sports Fan Journal Leave a Comment

With the NBA & NHL seasons concluded recently, US sports fans may be wondering what else they can watch to fill the sports void. As well as the current MLB season well and truly underway, the 2021 MLS season is also ongoing – it’s extremely exciting so far!

Now, the majority of MLS teams have played 13/14 league games, with the fixtures coming thick and fast. Therefore, there’s plenty of MLS action for you to get involved with – it’s been a very entertaining season so far.

With a restructure for the 2021 MLS season, all teams will play a total of 34 games in the regular season, before the best teams from each conference play in the playoffs. Now, we’re over a third of the way in – let’s take a look to see who’s leading the way!

Eastern Conference

In the east, it’s New England Revolution that are leading the way at the moment, with a seven point gap between them and second-placed Philadelphia Union. After a 5-0 win in their midweek game against a struggling Inter Miami side, New England have now put pressure on the teams below to try and keep up.

Alongside Philadelphia are five other teams in the Eastern Conference all in the playoff spots and more importantly, are all within three points of each other. The upper hand is with Orlando City and New York City FC, who have a game in hand on their rivals.

Just outside the playoff picture, and in the hunt for a spot in the postseason, are NY Red Bulls & DC United. They are currently looking to keep within touching distance of their eastern rivals to ensure they challenge later in the season.

It’s gone from bad to worse for Phil Neville & Inter Miami, who have lost six consecutive matches following the defeat to leaders New England, and are the only team in the MLS with single-digit points. Ouch.

Western Conference

Meanwhile, the Western Conference doesn’t have an outright leader just yet, with Seattle Sounders – top of the conference – just two points ahead of second-placed Sporting KC. Also in the immediate picture to challenge for the No.1 place are LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids.

Behind the frontrunners, LAFC, Portland Timbers and Minnesota United are currently sitting in the remaining playoff spots in the conference. However, Real Salt Lake & Houston Dynamo are hot on their tails, and will be looking to compete with their rivals for a feature in the 2021 MLS playoffs.

New MLS franchise Austin FC have made an average start to their first ever campaign in the league, and are sitting above three teams in the conference. Level on points with San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Austin do have a game in hand to increase the gap and push further up the table.

Like Inter Miami, FC Dallas find themselves struggling in last place of the west, with just two wins from 14 league games. This is the least number of wins, level with – you guessed it – Inter Miami.
