Rockies unable to get the win on Larry Walker day at Coors Field

The San Francisco Giants scored early and often to once again capture a 7-2 victory against the Colorado Rockies.

Larry Walker stole the show

The night started with Larry Walker being honored by the Rockies by having his number 33 retired. Walker made a great speech and the club put on a spectacular show, just as they did for Todd Helton several years earlier. As always, Walker stole the show and displayed his winning personality that endeared him to so many teammates, coaches, and fans over the years.

Rockies bats generate early runs

The home half of the first inning was a strong one for the Colorado offense as a Brenden Rodgers single and a Charlie Blackmon single were followed by a groundout by CJ Cron to plate the first run of the night for the home team. Ryan McMahon would then drive a double to deep left field to bring Blackmon around to score and give the Rockies an early 2-1 lead.

Brandon Belt homers twice

Brandon Belt got things going for the Giants in the first inning with a solo homerun to open up the scoring. However, Belt wasn’t done as he would come up with two men on in the fifth inning and drive a high drive to right field for a three-run home run. Belt has long been a thorn in the side of the Rockies pitching staff and tonight proved to not be an exception.

Rockies threaten in the ninth

Trailing 7-2 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Rockies offense put some pressure on the Giants. Colton Welker led things off with a single, followed by singles by Yonathan Daza and Raimel Tapia. With the bases loaded and nobody out, the Colorado lineup was poised to do damage and threaten the five-run lead the Giants had built. Alas, Brenden Rodgers grounded into a fielder’s choice and Charlie Blackmon struck out. CJ Cron then battled through his at-bat and ultimately grounded out to third base to end the threat.

Up next

Aurora native Kevin Gausman takes the mound for the Giants against Antonio Senzatela and the Rockies. First pitch at Coors Field is scheduled for 1:10pm MDT.
