Blalock makes his big league return
Managing to hold on to a narrow victory on Friday, the Colorado Rockies (22-72) aim to win the series against the Cincinnati Reds (48-47) on Saturday. They will certainly be hoping for some better luck from their starter pitcher than the last time he pitched for Colorado.
Bradley Blalock (0-2, 12.94 ERA) will make his first big league start with the Rockies for the in two months. You may recall that his last outing was an ill-fated one on May 10 when he allowed 12 runs on 13 hits in 3 2⁄3 innings against the San Diego Padres in a game they went on to win 21-0. Since then, he has had a rough go of it in Triple-A, posting an 8.75 ERA over 36 innings since May 16. He did deliver one of his better starts his last time out on July 4, allowing just three runs on six hits over five innings.
Brady Singer (7-7, 4.32 ERA) will pitch opposite him for Cincinnati. Since joining the Reds, it’s been a solid enough season for the 28-year-old. Over 18 starts, he has thrown 93 2⁄3 innings and has 83 strikeouts against 39 walks. His command has been a little iffy at times, but he’s proven quite reliable on the mound. He did well in June, going at least five innings in all of his starts and allowing no more than three runs in all but one of them. July has continued some adequate performance, and in his last start on July 7, he allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings against the Miami Marlins.
