Colorado Rockies game no. 94 thread: David Price vs Jon Gray

The Rockies look to avoid a sweep after getting dominated by the Dodgers in the first two games of the second half.

If the Colorado Rockies never had to play the Los Angeles Dodgers again, we could hope the Rockies would at least end on a high note. They haven’t defeated their NL West big brother since Opening Day, and the Rockies have lost the first two games of this series in humbling fashion.

Despite a valiant six-inning, three-run pitching effort last night from Kyle Freeland, the Rockies got bullied by Max Muncy for a 9-2 loss. The name of the game is “avoid the sweep” for the first series of the second half.

Taking the mound for the Rockies this afternoon is big Jon Gray. The right-hander has lowered his ERA for the season to 3.77, and his last three outings were all excellent quality starts. His last time up he capped off the end of the first half with a stellar outing against the San Diego Padres, where he gave up just one earned run and three hits across six innings and struck out seven batters.

On the bump for the Dodgers is former Cy Young winner and five-time All-Star lefty David Price. He has been mostly working out of the bullpen for the Dodgers, and will be starting just his fifth game of the season this afternoon. He’s 4-0 with an ERA of 3.23 over 30 ²⁄₃ innings, and hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of his four prior starts. Worse still, he hasn’t given up more than two runs at all since April 5, his second appearance of the season.
