Rox face D-backs in season finale
If misery truly loves company, Rockies and Diamondbacks fans can commiserate today on a forgettable, yet weird, season. The NL West foes — and current basement dwellers in the division — square off in the 2020 finale this afternoon in Arizona.
One of Colorado’s bright spots this season, Kyle Freeland (2-2, 3.69), will start for the Rockies (26-33). Freeland has bounced back nicely from his 2019 struggles, but he’s lacked run support in many of his starts. Since Freeland failed to make it out of the third inning on September 2 against the Giants, the left-hander has a 2.96 ERA in four starts. He lasted at least six innings in each of those appearances, but — breaking news here — the Rockies lost all of those games.
On the other side of the coin is Arizona starter Madison Bumgarner (0-4, 7.36 ERA), who has been a shell of his former self during his first season with the Diamondbacks (24-35). A prior World Series MVP with the Giants, Bumgarner is still searching for his first win in an Arizona uniform and hasn’t lasted more than 5 2⁄3 innings in any of his eight starts. However, his last outing was by far his best performance this season. He gave up two hits and no runs over five innings against the Astros on September 8.
Let the commiserating commence!
