Let the battle of the southpaws commence
The Colorado Rockies (9-42) delivered one of the most satisfying wins of the bleak season on Friday, winning 3-2 over the New York Yankees (30-20). It was a complete win for the club, with quality pitching, timely hitting, and stellar defense. The hope is that those same traits will follow in a tough matchup on Saturday.
Kyle Freeland (0-6, 5.68 ERA) is still looking for his first win and some run support as he takes the hill. In his last start against the Phillies, Freeland relieved a strong 5 1⁄3 innings, giving up one run on seven hits with six walks against two strikeouts. His previous start against the Rangers yielded similar results with three runs over six innings and five strikeouts. A recurring blister will be something to keep an eye on with Freeland.
Max Fried (6-0, 1.29 ERA) is a Cy Young candidate this season and is one of the toughest opponents the Rockies have faced. This season, Fried has allowed no more than two runs in any given start and has worked less than five full innings just once. Walks come at a premium as he deals out punchouts at a high rate. Opponents are hitting just .186 against him, meaning the Rockies will have to manufacture some runs like they did on Friday.
