Márquez turned back the clock in his last start, can he do it again?
The Colorado Rockies (7-37) have not had a great week during the road trip. Having lost four straight games, the team was shut out 8-0 by the Arizona Diamondbacks (24-21) on Friday. They managed just two hits against former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes and have another tough battle on Saturday.
While the offense needs to figure things out, there is some hope in the fact that the last time the Rockies won, Germán Márquez (1-6, 8.27 ERA) was on the mound. It’s been a rough year for the former All-Star, but the hope is that his last start was a turning point. Facing the San Diego Padres at Coors Field, Márquez fired seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He’s been hit hard in his starts, but he was economical in that start, getting plenty of ground balls for his defense to take advantage of and limit traffic. The Diamondbacks have a potent lineup of quality hitters, and it will be a true test to see if Márquez is on the right path back to form.
He’ll be opposed by Zac Gallen (3-5, 4.59 ERA), making his 10th start of the year. Much like the rest of the Diamondbacks rotation, Gallen got off to a bit of a slower start this season, but he’s started to dial things in for himself. In his first two starts of May, he allowed two runs on four hits over 13 innings of work. In his last outing, he allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5 2⁄3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. What’s been a constant this season in his ability to get strikeouts is that he has 19 in May but has battled his command all season. He has allowed at least two walks in all but one start this season and has allowed three or more walks in five starts.
Can the Rockies take advantage of that fact or will they fall victim to his strikeout numbers?
