The Warren Schaeffer era begins in the Lone Star State
The Colorado Rockies are starting fresh today as they take on the Texas Rangers under new management. Warren Schaeffer will manage his first game as the Rockies’ interim manager after the firing of Bud Black yesterday afternoon.
Before the coaching staff news, the Rockies snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating the San Diego Padres 9-3. It was their third losing streak of eight games this season, and one of four in all of MLB in 2025 (the Chicago White Sox holds the other).
The previous night, they got bludgeoned by the Friars 21-0 — a record-breaking loss in plenty of regards. It was the most runs they had allowed since they lost 25-1 on June 24, 2023 to the Los Angeles Angels, and the 24 hits they allowed since matching that mark against the Minnesota Twins on June 12, 2024 at Target Field.
But now it’s time to turn the page, and who better to mark the fresh start than tonight’s starter Chase Dollander (2-3, 7.71 ERA). In his last outing, Dollander did not factor into the decision in the May 7 extra-inning 8-6 loss against Jackson Jobe and the Detroit Tigers. He allowed six runs on five hits over a career-low three innings and did not strike out a batter for the first time in his career. It also marked back-to-back starts where he allowed three walks. But Dollander is learning, and hopefully will be able to bounce back against the Rangers this afternoon.
Dollander will face Rangers’ right-hander Tyler Mahle (3-1, 1.48 ERA). The 30-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in all of his previous starts. However, he has struggled a bit in his last three starts — he is 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA alongside three walks and seven strikeouts to raise his season ERA from 0.68 to 1.48, his highest ERA since Opening Day but still the second-best in MLB. In his last outing, Mahle also took the no decision in the Rangers’ 6-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox. He allowed two runs on four hits with one walk over five innings. He has faced the Rockies five times in his career when he was a member of the Cincinnati Reds, going 1-1 with a 5.93 ERA.
Can the Rockies truly start a new chapter tonight?
