The Rockies will try to snap a six-game skid as they welcome the division rival Padres
After suffering a sweep in San Diego earlier this season, the Colorado Rockies will try to strike back when they play host to the Padres with a three-game weekend set that begins on Friday evening.
Randy Vásquez (1-3, 3.90 ERA) will start the game for the Dads. In his second season with San Diego, the Dominican right-hander has experienced issues with his command as he enters Friday’s action leading MLB in walks allowed. His last start was indicative of this as he allowed five free passes in as many innings, though he responded effectively enough to allow just one run.
He owns a 7.94 ERA against the Rockies in three career appearances against them.
Antonio Senzatela (1-5, 5.50 ERA) gets the ball for the Rox. He’s allowed the second-most hits of any pitcher in baseball – behind only his teammate, Kyle Freeland. Senza has always allowed a fair amount of contact, but his 14.9 hits per nine is an eye-opening stat that’s unlikely to go down much against a San Diego team that enters Friday’s action with a top-five team batting average.
Senzatela last pitched a week ago in San Francisco, in which he allowed four runs in five innings in a losing effort.
Of course, a Rockies victory will depend on their much-maligned offense. Maybe Ryan McMahon, who’s gone 2-for-6 against Vásquez, can be the catalyst for an improved attack. Even while being 0 for his last 5 at-bats, McMahon is batting .364/.481/.818 this month, a massive improvement after a brutal start to the season.
