Can Freeland and the Rox rebound after extra-inning loss?

Despite plenty of opportunities to win the game, the Colorado Rockies (6-29) couldn’t capitalize in the series’ first game against the Detroit Tigers (23-13) on Wednesday. Now, they gear up for a twin bill on Thursday with a tough opponent on the mound in Game 1.

Kyle Freeland (0-4, 5.70 ERA) has had a rough go to start the season but has been keen on giving the Rockies some much-needed innings in the rotation. He has gone at least six innings four times through his first seven starts, and has failed to go five full innings just twice.

He is coming off one of his better outings when he allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings in San Francisco. He is still pounding the zone and limiting walks while picking up a handful of strikeouts while scattering a good number of hits. His last start at Coors Field was a forgettable one as he allowed six runs on 10 hits in 4 1⁄3 innings.

The Tigers will counter with former number one pick, Casey Mize (5-1, 2.70 ERA). It seemed for a time that Mize may not live up to the hype when he was drafted by the Tigers first overall in 2018, but he has continued to settle in over the years since his debut in 2021. This season, he is off to a fantastic start, showcasing why he was highly coveted by the Tigers when they drafted him.

Through his six starts, Mize has worked into the sixth inning in all of them, allowing one or fewer runs in four of them. He has two outings in which he allowed four runs, including his most recent, but he has still worked deep into ball games. Like Freeland, he will be in the zone and scatter hits while picking up a handful of strikeouts. However, opponents are hitting just .226 against him.
