Blalock gets the nod as Feltner goes on the IL
The Colorado Rockies (6-26) have struggled with consistency with their starting pitching as of late but had some hope thanks to Ryan Feltner. However, with Feltner landing on the injured list with back spasms, they will turn to another rookie to face the San Francisco Giants (20-13) and hopefully gain some offensive traction.
Bradley Blalock (0-1, 10.29 ERA) will take the place of Feltner and make his second start of the season. His previous start came on April 27 against the Cincinnati Reds at Coors Field. While he allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings of work, three of those runs came in the first inning, and Blalock settled in for the next three innings before running into trouble in the fifth when he loaded the bases.
Command issues have been a problem, resulting in bad counts that have led to the trouble. Opponents are hitting .387 against him and he owns a 2.00 WHIP, so he’ll have to be careful with the Giants’ lineup over the plate.
He’ll be opposed by reliever turned starter Jordan Hicks (1-3, 6.12 ERA). Making his seventh start of the year, Hicks has worked at least five innings in all but one start. In his last outing, he allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings of work. He tends to battle his command, leading to walks, but he can always tally up the strikeouts, owning 27 in 32 1⁄3 innings this season.
