The Rockies will attempt to stop and eight-game losing streak and avoid making history
It is safe to say this is not the start the Rockies had hoped for 2025.
Their 4-24 start to the season is their worst start through 28 games in franchise history, and they join the 2003 Tigers, 1988 Orioles and 1936 St. Louis Browns as the only teams since 1901 to lose at least 24 of their first 28 games. In addition, they have lost 15 of their last 16 games, the second time in franchise history they have lost 15 in a 16-game span. (It previously happened July 1-19 [G2], 1997).
But that’s (hopefully) in the past.
Tonight, the Colorado Rockies (4-24) will face the Atlanta Braves (13-15) in the second game of a three-game set.
For the Braves, AJ Smith-Shawver was recalled today and will take the mound. Through three starts with Atlanta this season, Smith-Shawver is 0-2 with a 4.61 ERA (7 ER in 13.2 IP) and 17 strikeouts.
Smith-Shawver has made one other start in his career against Colorado, allowing three runs over 5.2 innings on June 15, 2023 at Truist Park. He did earn the win that night, which stands as the lone victory of his career.
Tonight, Germán Márquez will look to get back on track. He is the longest-tenured active Rockie and will make his sixth start of the season.
In 20.1 IP over five games, Márquez has earned a 9.30 ERA (2.02 WHIP), including 14 strikeouts. During his most recent game, on April 24 against the Kansas City Royals, Márquez scored his 1000th strikeout to lead all Rockies pitchers. However, he also allowed a season-high eight hits, allowing six runs and issuing three walks.
