The Rockies will look to avoid a two-game sweep in Mexico
After yesterday’s 12-4 drubbing at the hands of the Houston Astros, the Colorado Rockies will look to avoid the sweep in Mexico. Two of the runs the Rockies scored came via a Ryan McMahon two-run homer in the first inning, making McMahon just the second Rockie to hit a home run in an international game. Dante Bichette did it on Opening Day 1999 in Monterrey against the San Diego Padres.
Austin Gomber (0-1, 4.32 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies this afternoon. He did not factor into the Rockies 3-1 loss to San Diego on Monday at Coors Field. Gomber threw five innings and allowed one run on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The challenge for Gomber (and the Rockies), though, will be the first inning. He has allowed six of his 12 runs in the first inning — his last start was the first time this season where he did not allow a run in the first. The Rockies have trailed at one point in each of their first 27 games and have scored first only five times. They have also been outscored 35-10 in the first inning, with opponents scoring in the first inning in 16 of 27 games.
Gomber will face fellow southpaw Framber Valdez (0-0, 2.19 ERA). Valdez is making his first start since April 2, when he was placed on the 15-day IL with left elbow soreness. Today also marks his first road start of 2024. In that game, he threw 7 2⁄3 scoreless innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out five.
