Can the Rox find some magic on the 30th anniversary of Coors Field?
30 years ago, the Colorado Rockies played their first game at 20th and Blake, capping off a marathon victory with a Dante Bichette walk-off home run. That team eventually went on to earn a playoff appearance as the first-ever Wild Card team in the National League.
It will be a day of celebrating the history of Coors Field as a one of the prestige ball parks in baseball.
Hopefully, the current team on the field can put their best foot forward for the occasion.
The Rockies (4-21) have seen their offense improve slightly over their last handful of games. However, they still haven’t managed to snag a victory since defeating the Washington Nationals on April 20 and face a tough matchup in Game 2 against the Cincinnati Reds (13-13).
The pitcher on the mound for the Rockies in their last victory was none other than Antonio Senzatela (1-3, 4.81 ERA). Senza was brilliant in his last outing, allowing one run on six hits in six innings of work. The key to his success was an abundance of contact outs, a keynote of a Senzatela start. That may be a risky venture against the Reds, as they were quite aggressive against Kyle Freeland on Friday, and Senzaleta is around the zone just as much without the ability to reliably get strikeouts. In 24 1⁄3 innings, he has nine strikeouts against five walks.
The Reds will counter with fireball right-hander Hunter Greene (2-2, 2.35 ERA). It was a career year for Greene in 2024 as he went 9-5 with a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts. The key to his success has been his elite fastball and nasty pitch mix that allows him to miss bats. In 30 2⁄3 innings this season, Greene has allowed just 18 hits, including four home runs, and has 35 strikeouts against six walks. His .164 batting average against and 0.78 WHIP are the best of his career currently, and he’s got a favorable matchup against the free-swinging Rockies.
