The Rockies host the swinging friars in the first of a four game series.
The Colorado Rockies have yet to win consecutive ballgames or a series so far in the 2024 campaign. Now the 12-12 San Diego Padres are coming to town for the first time this season as just the second National League West team the Rockies have faced. Last season the Rockies were 4-9 against the Padres with 50 total runs scored against them, third most of any team they faced.
Making his fifth start of the season for the Rockies is the left-handed Austin Gomber. Gomber has been fairly solid since a bumpy season debut back in March. Over his last three games Gomber has gone at least four innings—going five or more in the last two—and allowed less than three earned runs while striking out a minimum of four batters. His last time out against the Philadelphia Phillies he pitched for 5 1⁄3 innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
On the bump for the Dads is the right-handed former member of the Chicago White Sox, Dylan Cease. The former southside ace is off to an electric start with an ERA of 1.50 through five games. He has thrown three straight Quality Starts while striking out seven batters in each of them. His last time out he worked six innings against the Milwaukee Brewers while giving up just one earned run on two hits.
Cease has faced the Rockies just twice before in his career with an ERA of 6.52 in 9 2⁄3 innings of work. This season Cease is working with a five pitch arsenal. His primary pitch is a four seam fastball that averages 96.7 MPH. His primary breaking pitch is a slider, and he also uses a knuckle curveball, a sweeper, and a rarely utilized changeup.
