The Rockies will look to rebound from last night and win their third-straight series
Last night’s game was… forgettable at best (but historic at worst). In case you missed it, the Colorado Rockies were obliterated 18-0 by the Baltimore Orioles. And the worst part was that it was the second-worst shutout in franchise history. The worst came at the hands of the San Diego Padres on May 10 of this year when they lost 21-0.
In addition to the clobbering, they also lost rookie right-hander Zach Agnos to a right flexor strain and optioned lefty Ryan Rolison. For the corresponding moves, they recalled righties Jaden Hill and Angel Chivilli. Agnos started shaking his arm after throwing a pitch in the seventh inning before motioning to the trainer. He came off the field and immediately went into the clubhouse, and he did not look happy. Rolison has had an up-and-down rookie campaign, and the Rockies probably figured it was time for a reset to figure some things out.
There was a silver lining, though: Warming Bernabel both made his MLB debut and recorded his first MLB hit last night in the ninth inning (just one of two Rockies hits overall). Welcome to the Show!
Austin Gomber (0-4, 6.03 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies in his final start before the trade deadline. In his last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals, Gomber allowed five runs through 5 2⁄3 innings. He started with three scoreless framed before allowing two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth. He did not walk a batter for the first time in 2025 and fanned a season-high six batters. Gomber has faced the Orioles once before on August 30, 2024 at Coors Field. He allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts over six innings of work in the 5-3 loss.
Gomber will face Tomoyuki Sugano (7-5, 4.54 ERA). The 35-year-old Japanese right-hander signed with the Orioles in the offseason and made his MLB debut on March 30 after 12 years with the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball. During his time in NPB, Sugano won the Central League MVP award three times and the Eiji Sawamura Award (bestowed upon the best starting pitcher in NPB) twice. In his last outing against the Cleveland Guardians, Sugano tossed just 3 2⁄3 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with one homer, one hit batter, four walks and four strikeouts.
