Colorado Rockies game no. 102 thread: Lucas Gilbreath vs. Andrew Heaney

Can the offense replicate yesterday’s explosive performance?

After last night’s four hour blowout, the Rockies have an opportunity to win another road series. It would be just their second road series win after earning their first just before the All-Star break in San Diego. To get the job done, the offense will need to replicate just some of the firepower they showed yesterday.

Chi Chi González was scheduled to start tonights game but was placed on MLB’s COVID protocols list. So instead, left handed rookie Lucas Gilbreath (0-1, 6.27 ERA) will make his first major league career start. The Rockies will hope Gilbreath can get through just two innings. They will not try and push him beyond that unless his pitch count is low. Gilbreath has not started a game since 2019 when he was at High-A Lancaster.

For the Angels, it’ll be the left handed veteran Andrew Heaney (6-7, 5.32 ERA) getting the start. Heaney is in search of consistency, he’s had a couple of shut outs and some nice one run games but he’s also had some bad three or four inning games that get away from him. He’s coming off of a seven inning start in Minnesota that saw him hold the Twins to just four hits and two runs while striking out seven. When he is on he can rack up the swing and misses with his curveball and changeup mixed in between his heavy use of the four seam fastball. Heaney has faced the Rockies three times before and has a 3.10 ERA with 18 strikeouts to just three walks against Colorado.

The Rockies will be without Mychal Givens who was traded earlier today to the Cincinnati Reds. Hug watch continues.
