Colorado Rockies dismiss manager Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redmond

Infield coach Warren Schaeffer will act as manager for the remainder of the season

In a surprising turn of events following their victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies announced that they have relieved manager Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redmond of their duties.

Third base coach Warren Schaeffer will serve as the interim manager for the remainder of the season, while hitting coach Clint Hurdle will take over as bench coach.

The move is one that many Rockies fans have been eager to see after an absolutely abysmal 7-33 start to the 2025 season. Despite the recent win, Colorado finds themselves with the worst record in MLB and dead last in most statistical categories.

Black’s managerial tenure ends after nine seasons at the helm.

His record with the team stands at 543-690. Under his leadership, Colorado made the postseason in 2017 and 2018, the only time in franchise history that the team made the playoffs in consecutive seasons, but they’ve since finished last place in the NL West for the past four seasons, with a fifth seemingly a foregone conclusion.

More updates will be made as they become available.

UPDATE: Rockies owner Dick Monfort released the following statement:

“Our play so far this season, especially coming off the last two seasons, has been unacceptable. Our fans deserve better, and we are capable of better,” said Rockies Owner, Chairman and CEO Dick Monfort. “While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out, these changes are necessary. We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and to evaluate all areas of our operation so we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies Baseball.

“I want to thank Bud Black and Mike Redmond for their contributions to the organization across their eight years here. I appreciate their hard work and dedication and wish them nothing but the best going forward.”

He added,

“I believe that Warren is the right person to lead us forward for the remainder of this season, develop our young talent at the Major League level and get our club back to playing a better brand of baseball,” said General Manager Bill Schmidt. “He has a great ability to connect with both veterans and young players and is an excellent communicator.

“Clint will remain focused on helping our players offensively and will continue to assist Warren and our players as an experienced voice within our clubhouse.”

UPDATE: The new Rockies coaching staff is becoming clearer.

The Colorado Rockies’ new hitting coaches will be Jordan Pacheco and Nick Wilson.
Andy Gonzalez will be moved from assistant hitting coach to third base coach, replacing Warren Schaeffer, who becomes manager.
