21-Year-Old Rockies Reliever Makes MLB History This Season in Debut

June 4, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Before their first game of a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds, the Colorado Rockies struggling starting pitcher Ryan Feltner looked to prevail against all odds. However, Feltner looked atrocious during his time on the mound. The 27-year-old right-handed pitcher allowed eight runs on 10 hits in just 4 1/3 innings. During this 13-3 loss by the Rockies, Colorado decided it was time to debut 21-year-old right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli. The team called up the young promising Rockies reliever back on May 3rd after the Miami Marlins swept Colorado. Although he gave up two runs on four hits in two innings on the mound on Monday, Chivilli made MLB history during this 2024 regular season.

Rockies Reliever Angel Chivilli Makes MLB History This Season in Debut

Angel Chivilli at 21 years and 311 days old made MLB history, becoming the youngest player to debut in the Majors this season. He became the sixth youngest pitcher to debut for the Rockies. Colorado’s shortstop Ezequiel Tovar was one of the youngest players to start on Opening Day last season. Chivilli became the youngest pitcher since Germán Márquez who debuted at 21 years and 206 days old on September 8th, 2016, against the San Diego Padres. Before being called up, Chivilli appeared in 15 games for the Rockies’ Double-A team, the Hartford Yard Goats. He put up a 1-0 record with one save. In 18 innings pitched, the 21-year-old reliever recorded a 2.50 ERA, 1.556 WHIP, and 29 strikeouts.

Chivilli looked a little shaky in his first time in a Rockies uniform. Regardless, he is still extremely young and full of potential. The 21-year-old Rockies reliever gave up a two-run home run to Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson. Yet, Chivilli was able to limit Cincinnati’s onslaught. As he gets more time on the mound this season, there’s a huge hope that the young, promising reliever will put up around the same numbers he did back when he was in Double-A.
