Free agents Tyus Jones, Russell Westbrook on Kings’ radar

June 26, 2025 by Hoops Hype

As NBA reporter Marc Stein reported on Tuesday, league and team sources say the Kings indeed have serious interest in veteran Dennis Schröder. That is, of course, if he doesn’t get something done with the Detroit Pistons first (league sources say he’s been in talks on that front this week). Fellow free agents Tyus Jones and Russell Westbrook are also known to be options that the Kings are considering.

More on this storyline

Given Ofer Yannay’s ambition, many high-profile names have been linked to Hapoel Tel Aviv. One of them is Russell Westbrook, with reports suggesting the club was ready to offer a historic contract. “That’s 100% fake news. There were numbers mentioned — $50 million per year — which is crazy. I get that Hapoel Tel Aviv draws attention because we’re spending money. I counted 37 players who were linked with us. It’s good we’ll have three rosters, because when you have 37 players, it makes things easier (laughs). To be serious — it’s not true. There was no interest, and no one approached him.” -via Basketball Sphere / June 16, 2025

Amid a flurry of offseason transfer rumors, Hapoel Tel Aviv general manager George Hinas has set the record straight on the most high-profile name linked to the club – Russell Westbrook. Speaking to Basketball Sphere’s Vuk-Milos Petrovic, Hinas dismissed reports that the Israeli club had any interest in bringing the NBA star overseas. “That’s 100% fake news,” he said bluntly. “There were numbers mentioned, $50 million per year, which is crazy.” -via TalkBasket / June 16, 2025
Rival teams suspect the Bucks will end up in the tax but keep their payroll below the $196 million first apron, which would open their ability to access more of the $14 million midlevel exception. They might need a large chunk of it for a starting point guard in place of Lillard, with the candidates including free agents such as Dennis Schroder, Tyus Jones and Malcolm Brogdon. -via ESPN / June 16, 2025
If Lopez is re-signed, Milwaukee doesn’t have many realistic options to get under the tax. If he enters free agency, the Bucks can easily avoid it. Sources said the franchise is prepared to once again enter the tax after spending more than $200 million in luxury tax alone over the past few seasons — more than every team but the Golden State Warriors, LA Clippers, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns since 2012, per Spotrac.
