Throughout his last two seasons of high school football, Cameron Newton rushed for more than 4,400 yards and 72 touchdowns.
Yet, he didn’t have a college home – until now.
On Monday morning, the former Walnut Grove (Texas) High School star verbally committed to Colorado and head coach Deion Sanders for the 2026 class.
Listed by 247Sports.com at 5-foot-9, 185 pounds, Newton doesn’t have a star rating, but has 19 scholarship offers, mainly from FCS schools, as well as Air Force, Army, Navy and Temple. He is the 15th member of CU’s prep recruiting class for this year.
Named the 4-5A Division II MVP as a senior, Newton led Walnut Grove to a 12-1 record, 4-5A Division II championship and a trip to the third round of the state playoffs. He rushed for 2,402 yards and 41 touchdowns, topping the 100-yard mark in all 13 games. He also caught 35 passes for 388 yards and three touchdowns.
Walnut Grove is a new school in Prosper, Texas, that opened in 2023. That season, Newton rushed for 709 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore. In 2024, he rushed for 2,007 yards and 31 touchdowns and helped the Wildcats to a district championship.
Newton joins a re-tooled running back room for the Buffs, which includes transfers Richard Young (Alabama), Damian Henderson II (Sacramento State) and Jaquail Smith (Sacramento State).
Junior Micah Welch returns after leading the Buffs with 384 rushing yards this past season. Senior DeKalon Taylor also returns after posting 83 rushing yards and 106 receiving yards in four games before a season-ending injury.
