Spencer Dinwiddie signs free agent deal with Charlotte Hornets

Good news for one Buff, bad news for another.

Entering his 12th season in the NBA (!), Spencer Dinwddie has signed one-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets. This will be Dinwiddie’s sixth NBA home, having played in Detroit, Brooklyn, Washington, Dallas and Los Angeles.

Dinwiddie mostly recently played for the Mavericks, his second stint there, where he averaged around 11 points and 4 assists in 27 minutes per game. His numbers are down from earlier in his career, but he’s settled in nicely as a veteran guard who can score some points off the bench.

This move doesn’t make the most sense. Dinwiddie has played almost exclusively on contenders the last five years and the Hornets are far from competitive. He also plays the same position as not only LaMelo Ball, but also Collin Sexton and Tre Mann, two combo guards Jeff Peterson traded for and signed in free agency, respectively.

This is also bad news for KJ Simpson, Colorado’s March Madness hero who the Hornets selected in the second round of the 2024 draft. He played 36 games this past season, mostly while Ball was out with an injury. Now with three more guards on the roster, it’s worth wondering if there’s a future for him in Charlotte.
