Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders has fired back at a now-former teammate who was critical of how his father handled his decision to transfer.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Colorado transfer Xavier Smith recalled Coach Prime telling him to hit the portal and not “waste a year” trying to earn a spot on the roster. Smith accused Sanders of “destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves” and lacking compassion.
“We sat on the sofa, and he’s talking to us, but he’s not even looking at us,” Smith told The Athletic. “I’m looking Coach Kelly dead in his eyes. (Sanders) said he felt like I should hit the portal. He didn’t want me to waste a year thinking I could earn a spot. I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me.
“He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves. The way he did it, it could’ve been done with a little more compassion.”
But any compassion Shedeur might have had for Smith after this report is clearly gone. Taking to X on Tuesday, the Colorado quarterback dismissed Smith as someone he didn’t even remember. He said that Smith must have been “very mid at best” to leave no impression like that.
“Ion even remember him tbh. Bro had to be very mid at best,” Sanders said.
Fans in the comments certainly didn’t appreciate Sanders reacting in that way. A number of fans pointed out that he effectively proved Smith’s point be acting so callous with that response.
But the Buffaloes have not cared what anyone else thinks about them for a while.
