Football recruiting: CU Buffs add four transfer commits, including pair from Tennessee

May 3, 2025 by The Denver Post

Transfer portal season is in full swing for the Colorado football team.

The Buffaloes landed three transfer commits Wednesday morning, and another on Wednesday evening.

The list of newcomers includes a pair of former Tennessee players in offensive lineman Larry Johnson III and defensive back John Slaughter. CU and head coach Deion Sanders also landed a commitment from Incarnate Word running back DeKalon Taylor, who also was one of the most dangerous punt returners in the nation last season at the FCS level.

On Wednesday night, Kansas State defensive back Noah King committed to the Buffs.

Slaughter appeared in 23 games in two seasons at Tennessee but wasn’t a regular part of the defensive rotation, finishing last season with five tackles in 54 defensive snaps. He made his first career interception late in the Volunteers’ rout of UTEP. Slaughter has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Johnson, listed by Tennessee at 6-foot-7, 348 pounds, was a top junior college prospect when he signed with the Volunteers ahead of the 2023 season, but he played in only eight games in two years at Tennessee along the offensive line. He played 133 offensive snaps last season. He appeared in seven other games on special teams.

Taylor will be another candidate to possibly breathe life into CU’s nonexistent running game after rushing for 909 yards and nine touchdowns in 11 games last season at Incarnate Word. Listed at 5-9, 166 pounds, Taylor averaged 6.0 yards per carry and had a 97-yard touchdown run against Northern Arizona, which set a record as the longest run in team history. Taylor also recorded 22 receptions for 122 yards, and his punt return average of 15.1 yards ranked sixth in the FCS level.

Taylor was UIW’s primary kickoff returner in 2022 and 2023, with a total of 29 returns for 568 yards (19.6 average). He was the Cardinals’ punt returner the past two years, with 40 returns for 493 yards (12.3 average) and a touchdown. He has one year of eligibility remaining.King was a four-star recruit who enrolled at K-State in January but will now play his true freshman season with the Buffs. Listed at 6-2, 200, he is expected to play cornerback for the Buffs, but can also play safety.

King starred at Hamilton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, recording 41 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one interception as a senior last fall.
