Deion Sanders doesn’t take the same recruiting approach as most college football head coaches.
Since taking Colorado’s job in December 2022, Sanders has never contacted a recruit off-campus. Following Saturday’s spring game, Coach Prime explained his message to recruits.
“I don’t sell anything because I don’t have anything to sell,” Sanders told reporters, via On3. “I don’t sell them dreams. I don’t sell them hope and sell them wishes. I tell them everything they get, they’re going to have to earn.
“I don’t promise you a number, I’m not promising you a position, I’m not promising you to start. If you want it, come and get it. We don’t sugarcoat anything. We’re not going to baby you. We’re not going to hold your hand. You have 127 years of NFL experience up under this roof. It’s on you.”
Sanders lauded his program’s “tremendous navigational system” before noting that conversations can get “repetitive” with prospects who want to talk about NIL deals.
“If you want money, go to that department and talk about that, but I’m not the guy to talk about that,” he continued. “I want to talk football. So if it’s a business deal, that’s something else. I want you to come here for football. Now, once we get the football together, if the business works, let’s do it.”
The Hall of Famer then seemed to sell himself to the media by explaining the unique perspective he offers.
“What separates me from everyone else is I’ve sat in three seats,” Sanders said. “I gave you a dramatic pause so you could follow me. I’m the parent, right? Couple kids in college football. I’ve been a kid, right? I was a straight dog. Now I’m the coach. I know what the whole room is thinking. It’s a tremendous advantage, and I absolutely love it.”
Sanders also claimed they “don’t put anybody down to come up.” Coach Prime and his son, Colorado quarterback quarterback Shedeur Sanders, may want to review that rule following their recent social media activity.
