CU Buffs football, Drew Wilson parting ways

January 7, 2021 by The Denver Post Leave a Comment

Drew Wilson has been the Colorado football strength and conditioning coordinator for the past five years.

Colorado is parting ways with Drew Wilson, the football program’s director of strength and conditioning for the past five years.

Wilson was working under a three-year contract that is set to expire on Feb. 14. According to a spokesperson from CU, Wilson’s contract, which paid him an annual salary of $220,000, will not be renewed.

Hired Jan. 4, 2016, by former head coach Mike MacIntyre, Wilson worked for three head coaches during his time at CU. Current head coach Karl Dorrell was hired in February and elected to retain Wilson, who has coordinated the strength and conditioning for each player on the current roster.

Prior to coming to CU, Wilson, 42, was the director of strength and conditioning at Maryland for five years (2011-15). He was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Connecticut from 2006-10.

When state legislation allowed for more assistants to receive multi-year contracts in 2018, CU made it a priority to get a contract for Wilson, who had received opportunities from other schools.

Wilson has been praised by players and coaches throughout his time with the Buffs, particularly this past year. Wilson and his staff helped players coordinate home workouts and navigate through Boulder County Public Health orders to work out individually and small groups in preparation for this past season.

“I’ve been giving him kudos in front of the team and our staff for his dedication from his area and his staff of doing everything within the protocols that have been put on us,” Dorrell said of Wilson in October. “He’s kind of an unsung hero right now because he did the job and he didn’t bat an eye about it. He knew we had to get ourselves ready – as ready as we can be for camp and there’s no question that those guys have done a great job with getting us to this point.”

Outside linebacker Jason Harris, who announced his decision on Dec. 31 to leave CU, announced Wednesday that he will transfer to Arizona. One of the top recruits in CU’s 2020 class, Harris was a four-star recruit from Higley (Ariz.) High school. His brother, Jalen, is a linebacker at Arizona. His father, Sean, also played linebacker at Arizona, from 1991-94 before seven seasons in the NFL, and his mother, ChaRon, played for the Wildcats’ women’s basketball team.
