Colorado QB Ryan Staub plans to enter transfer portal

December 29, 2025 by The Denver Post

Colorado backup quarterback Ryan Staub is planning to enter the transfer portal.

ESPN reported Monday night that Staub, who has been at CU the past three seasons, will enter the portal when it opens on Friday.

Staub, a redshirt sophomore this past season, was one of the longest-tenured players on the team, arriving at CU in January of 2023. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

In his three seasons as a backup for the Buffs, Staub completed 53 of 99 passes (53.5%) for 681 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran for a score.

CU’s primary backup for starter Shedeur Sanders in 2023 and 2024, Staub appeared in seven total games in those seasons. He started the 2023 season finale for an injured Sanders, going 17-of-24 for 195 yards and a touchdown in a 23-17 loss at Utah.

This past season, Staub began the year third on the depth chart. He came off the bench on Sept. 6 against Delaware and went 7-for-10 for 158 yards and two touchdowns, sparking a sputtering offense.

The next week, Staub was given the start at Houston, but went just 19-of-35 for 204 yards a touchdown and two interceptions in a 36-20 loss.

Staub threw just 10 passes the rest of the season, including going 0-for-2 with two interceptions in his last appearance as a Buff, Nov. 1 against Arizona.

Although the portal does not open until Friday, 20 scholarship Buffs have already announced their intentions to transfer. That list doesn’t include safety Terrance Love and cornerback Kyle Carpenter, who both left the team during the season.
