Men’s basketball* — that would be crazy if JR Payne did that.
Meglio tardi che mai.
The Colorado Buffaloes have added another forward to the 2025-26 men’s basketball roster. Well, it might be more accurate to say he’s been added to the cafeteria and weight room before he plays a game at the CU Events Center.
Tad Boyle’s newest addition is Leonardo van Elswyk. He’s a 7’1 pile of sticks and bones the coaches uncovered in Italy. Big Wyk has been hooping on Olimpia Milano’s U18 team. He’s developed a well-rounded game at the biggest Italian club and the Buffs were impressed with him at a January showcase.
Van Elwyk has a busy summer ahead, as his work with the Italian U20 team means he won’t be able to join the Buffs on their Australia summer tour. Whenever he does meet the team, his best friend will be Steve Englehart, the program’s well-respected strength coach.
It’s fair to assume the Italian big will redshirt this season. The Buffs still have the burly Elijah Malone playing his fifth season of college ball, as well as versatile forwards Bangot Dak and Sebastian Rancik. Depth might be an issue, however, as freshman Tacko Fawaz is the only other big on the team.
Benvenuto, Leonardo!
