Arizona Attempted – And Failed – Onside Kick To Start Game vs. Deion Sanders, Colorado

November 15, 2024 by The Spun

Deion Sanders, Colorado Band Story Isn’t True (1:28)

The Arizona Wildcats are at home against Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes today and Arizona head coach Brent Brennan seemed to want to get some early momentum for his team. His plan backfired.

On the opening play of the game, Arizona were set up to kick the ball off. But rather than kick it deep, Arizona’s kicker tapped the ball for an onsides kick. Unfortunately for him, a Colorado player was able to track the ball and jump on it before an Arizona special teams player was able to pull it in, giving the ball to Colorado in great starting field position:

With only 46 yards to paydirt, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and running back Isaiah Augustave easily covered the ground they needed to secure a 7-0 lead within three minutes of the game kicking off.

Fans seemed baffled that Arizona would risk giving Colorado so much early momentum by attempting that trick play:

“Whoever thought this up needs to be fired,” one user remarked.

“Colorado’s offense is too explosive to be playing with them like that,” wrote another.

“Why tf would you start with a onside kick?” a third bluntly asked.

Arizona’s first offensive possession wasn’t anything to write home about either. They went three-and-out, losing six yards on the drive before punting.

On Colorado’s second drive, Drelon Miller scored a touchdown to give the Buffaloes a 14-0 lead.

Arizona were 2.5-point favorites in this home team against the Buffaloes, but now they’ll be lucky if they can simply keep the game competitive, let alone come back and win.

The game is being played on Fox.
