In New York, quarterback Zach Wilson wore the number 2 and played like number 2. Now that he’s with the Denver Broncos, the ex-Jet is getting a new number.
On Thursday, the Broncos revealed that Wilson has been assigned the No. 10 jersey for the coming season. It’s a rather new number for him as he has not worn it before in the NFL, college or high school as far as we can tell.
But some found Wilson’s jersey choice rather interesting given the position the Broncos are in heading into tonight’s draft. Some have pointed out that Oregon quarterback Bo Nix favors the No. 10 jersey and is a candidate to be taken by the Broncos in the NFL Draft.
As a result, Wilson could be gearing up to get some money from Nix in exchange for selling him his favorite number.
“Shrewd financial move by Zach Wilson to take number ten? Bo Nix number?” Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright noted.
The actual reason might be a little more simple: All of the numbers that Wilson has previously worn – 1 (high school and college), 2 (NFL) and 11 (college) – are currently being worn by other members of the team.
The Broncos acquired Wilson in a late-round pick swap with the New York Jets earlier this week. He was the team’s starter for the first two years and started the 2023 season as their backup before Aaron Rodgers went down with a season ending injury in the first quarter of Week 1.
Wilson is 12-21 as a starter with a 57-percent completion rate, 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.
Will he play better in his new number? Will he be keeping this one for long?
