Zach Azzanni helping Broncos' Diontae Spencer learn nuances of WR position

July 23, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

Diontae Spencer’s main contributions to the Denver Broncos come on special teams as a returner, but he’s also a wide receiver, and his role on offense could continue to expand if he shows improvement at the position.

Spencer has caught nine passes and rushed six times over the last two seasons. To continue learning the nuances of playing wide receiver and to improve his chances of earning more work on offense, Spencer has been closely following the instruction of WRs coach Zach Azzanni.

“For me, he’s helped me [with] the game slowing down tremendously,” Spencer said of Azzanni on June 10. “I was a guy that — I played wide receiver, but I didn’t really know all the nuances of being a wide receiver, especially being a speed guy — breaking points, getting in and out of breaks and all those different things, and executing the right way, setting up routes and just knowing when to speed things up or slow things down mentally.

“I feel like my game [has] been elevated [with] the growth of those things that he’s been teaching. That’s one thing that he’s helped me with tremendously. I feel like I’m more comfortable at wideout. My game will just keep elevating at that position.”

Denver has a crowded receiver room, so Spencer might not get many snaps on offense this fall, but he’ll be ready when the opportunities arise.
