Vic Fangio Names Quarterback Getting First Training Camp Snap

July 28, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock against the Chargers.

We can now officially say Aaron Rodgers will not be playing for the Denver Broncos this year. Either Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater will be the team’s Week 1 starter.

The 2019 second-round pick and the veteran trade acquisition are expected to compete for the job in training camp. Broncos head coach Vic Fangio is not revealing which player has the upper hand going into camp, but did share today that it will be Lock getting the first team rep.

“He was here. He’s been here. He has more seniority with the Broncos. It really isn’t a big deal,” Fangip said via DNVR Sports’ Zac Stevens.

Lock has been an up-and-down performer in his 18 career starts with the Broncos. He’s completed 59.1% of his pass attempts for 3,953 yards, 23 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Bridgewater started 15 games for the Carolina Panthers last year and put up serviceable numbers: 3,733 yards, 15 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 69.1% completion percentage. However, Carolina did not view him as the team’s franchise QB, hence their willingness to trade him earlier this offseason.

“They’re both getting better,” Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said about Lock and Bridgewater last month. “Obviously, they’ve both gotten to work with the ones and share the workload in regards to the reps.

“I’ve seen improvement in Drew with his decision-making, timing and accuracy. For Teddy, it’s more getting up to speed with what we’ve done. He’s right on board with the new things we’re doing.”

The Broncos open up the 2021 season at the New York Giants on September 12.
